The post-career Apple setup that I recommend most often is a combination of the desktop for the home office and the tablet for everywhere else.

The iMac is your home base and has all of the power to create, connect, and complete your tasks as well as organize all of the things that you need to do now that you are on your own and without the corporate IT support that we all seemed to have.
The iPad is your patio and couch companion that lets you search for answers quickly and be more creative with photos and documents, especially when combined with the Apple Pencil (one of my personal favorites) This comes in great when you leave on vacation too!
