Third-Party Gear I Actually Recommend (to Make Apple Even Better)
Apple’s ecosystem is incredible right out of the box. But just like a great car benefits from a comfy seat cushion or a phone mount that actually works, your Apple devices can become even more powerful—and more enjoyable—with the right third-party accessories.
I’m not into clutter or over-complication, but I am into smart enhancements. These are the few non-Apple things I consistently recommend to my clients over 55 (and frankly, everyone else) to make daily use smoother, more productive, and a little more fun.
1. MagSafe Chargers: Keep It Simple, Snap It On
Apple’s MagSafe is one of those quiet revolutions—wireless charging that actually aligns properly. The thing is, third-party MagSafe chargers often do the job better than Apple’s, especially when it comes to price, length of cord, and stand options.
• Recommended use: Nightstands, desks, kitchen counters.
• Why I love it: No more fumbling with cables or squinting to find the port. Just click it into place and forget it.
Bonus tip: I often recommend getting a dual MagSafe stand that can charge both your iPhone and AirPods at the same time. Neat, tidy, done.
2. Stands & PopSockets: Comfort and Convenience
Your hands do a lot during the day—why not give them a break?
• Phone stands let you position your iPhone or iPad just right for FaceTime, recipe reading, workouts, or watching videos while multitasking.
• PopSockets or magnetic grips make your iPhone easier to hold, especially if you’re using a larger model. Less strain, more control.
Why this matters for older adults: Holding a phone for long periods can be tiring. These tools add comfort, safety (less dropping!), and usability.
3. Elgato Stream Deck Neo: For the Power User in All of Us
Don’t let the name fool you—this isn’t just for gamers or YouTubers.
The Stream Deck Neo is a brilliant tool that acts like a control panel for your Mac. You can assign buttons to open apps, start Zoom calls, control smart lights, play music, even trigger automation shortcuts.
• Why it’s amazing: It turns complicated multi-step actions into a single button press.
• Best use case: You want your “Morning Setup” (calendar, weather, coffee playlist, HomeKit lights) to launch with one press? Done.
It’s the kind of thing that makes you feel like a tech pro without actually needing to be one.
4. Portable SSD: Your Personal Cloud in Your Pocket
I always recommend my clients have a fast, small SSD drive handy for backup and storage.
Apple’s built-in storage is great, but not unlimited. And cloud services aren’t always ideal when you’re off the grid or have large files (videos, photos, music projects).
• My pick: A USB-C SSD like the Samsung T7 or SanDisk Extreme.
• Why it’s essential: Backup is your best friend. Whether it’s for Time Machine, Photos, or just peace of mind, this drive is light, fast, and reliable.
Final Thought: Enhance Without Overcomplicating
You don’t need a drawer full of accessories. Just a few right ones can change how your tech fits into your life. And if you need help picking or setting any of this up—well, you know where to find me.
Michael Coury Tech is all about making the Apple lifestyle work for you, not the other way around.
